Can sugar poison you?

Report on 60 minutes has the internet abuzz

Is sugar toxic? Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at UC, claims that sugar is toxic, in that it leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and more. For that reason, he states, it should be considered in the same category as tobacco and alcohol where warnings should be added to sugary foods, and more public health campaigns should be put into place to warn people about the dangers of sugar. For fans of high fructuce corn syrup, AKA corn sugar, the concept that "corn sugar is the same as table sugar" gets some justification in the sense that it is considered to be just as bad for you. UC Davis researchers say that LDL cholesterol levels increase with the consumption of sweetened drinks, and cardiovascular risks are heightened. For high fructose corn syrup, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and converts it into fat (LDL) that turns into arterial plaque. On top of all that, studies are showing that sugar helps cancerous tumors grow because of increased insulin production, so colon and breast cancers may be on the rise because of sugar. Naturally, the sugar industry is disputing this information, as most people would when someone comes out and says that their job is akin to pushing death at the dinner table.
